AP's 1040 vs 1140 series whats the difference

Hello,

Can anyone advise what the specific difference is between the 1040 and 1140 series AP's.  The specifications look exactly the same and the only difference I can make out is the M-Drive feature, but does this really make a difference when using with a Lan controller?

Kind Regards

Dave

Here are the data sheets for each; as reference

1040 Series

1140 Series

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/wireless/ps5678/ps10092/datasheet_c78-502793.html

For 802.11n MIMO considerations

The 1040 has 2x2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) with two spatial streams

The 1140 has 2x3 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) with two spatial streams

This may not make any difference depending upon the antennas your client adapters are equipped with.

Per the data sheet, and other than the MIMO antenna config, the only difference I see are some 802.11n feature enchancements on the 1140.

ClientLink improves reliability and coverage for legacy clients

BandSelect improves 5-GHz client connections in mixed client environments

VideoStream uses multicast to improve rich-media applications

Maybe someone else can chime in on this?

As what Dave has pointed out, the main difference with the 1040 and the 1140 is the MIMO.  Because the 1040 only supports 2 x 2 MIMO, the price is lower.

You can manage either models with or without WLC.

but does this really make a difference when using with a Lan controller?

I'd be honest to you and my answer to this question would be "it depends on what you are trying to do".  The 1040, in my humble oppinion, was developed for people who complain that the cost of the 1140.

A cheaper alternative, if you are fine with just plain 802.11 a/b/g, is the 1130.  Surprisingly, it's still in the market and Cisco has not yet hang the "end-of-sale" sign over it.
