Broadcast Propagation in Flexconnect WLAN

Hey Guys,

Just want to ask how broadcast works on WLANs using Flexconnect Local Switching? I read an article that says local mode is safe with broadcast traffic as the controller does not send traffic back to clients.

How about in flex mode where the switching is local? I am asking because we recently deployed a /23 subnet to consolidate all SSIDs. Would it impact the network badly? I saw some implementations from other people also doing /23 as a subnet and didn't experience issues but just wanted to check if that's safe.

Thanks,

John

With an locally switched network broadcast traffic is being forwarded to all clients despite of the "Broadcast Forwarding" setting of the controller.

I have seen some bigger networks being used with flex-connect as well, but I advise you to monitor the overall performance. If possible use different VLANs for different use cases to have some separation (this also gives you the ability to perform traffic filtering on the upstream router/firewall). You can do this while still using one WLAN with AAA override send by RADIUS or by using local profiles on the WLC. Make sure that you create a VLAN - ACL mapping for every possible VLAN ID so the access-points are aware of those VLANs as well.

Hello Freerk_Terpstra  ,

By chance, do you have any official Cisco documentation or  link that you can provide to support your statement above:

With an locally switched network broadcast traffic is being forwarded to all clients despite of the "Broadcast Forwarding" setting of the controller.

Not that I don't trust you, actually I know it works that way based on my own experiense, but I need to proof it to my customer and I'm having a hard time finding official wording for this.

Thanks a lot in advance!
