Post the bootup process so we can see what code is running on the AP.  You can also search for Cisco AP 1231 factory reset.  Then you can use this guide as long as it's running an autonomous code you would see a k9w7.

see this link

To configure a 1231G see his link:

that is the boot process . .i think

I have no idea what to do next.

Your AP is running a lightweight image, what you need for a standalone AP is autonomous image. The issue is that you need a support contract to download an autonomous image.  An AP with a lightweight image has no GUI and requires a WLC.

thank you scott for your replies.

i don't have a 'support contract', so what is a WLC and how do i get one?

You can find them cheap on eBay:

https://www.serversupply.com/products/part_search/pid_query.asp?pid=285681

Just make sure you can get a code from the person whom is selling it. Look at the WLC matrix to see what code is supported:

. . sheesh . i was hoping i could use this dam thing for a wifi ap and its one headache after another! isn't there any way i can use it  as a simple household ap? when i bought it from newegg they gave no indication that it would be one expense after another . .

The only way you could use it the way you want is to obtain the autonomous code and convert the AP.

Try this... enter this command on your AP:

debug capwap console cli

dir

post that update.

I have a bunch of old 1242's like 10+ and a 1252 I used in my lab:)

No luck. I was hoping there was an autonomous image also but there isn't.

This thing is labeled AIR-AP1231G-A-K9 and it is loaded with the wrong software? Should it not be labeled LAP1231G-A-K9?
