Can't see AP in Controller

I can't see my AP's (1852iI) in 2504 Controller.  I also can't get into AP's via wireless.  They aren't broadcasting SSID.

No, but your authorized Cisco reseller or your local Cisco SE/AM will be able to give you the figures. 

Also, does the managed switch have to be a Cisco switch or can it be a different model?

Depending on the "size" and "shape" of the network, any switch will do fine.
