CAP WAP Data traffic in Flex Connect mode

We configured the APs at one of our remote campuses in Flex Connect in order to relieve congestion on our WAN link; however, we reviewing our Netflow statistics, the majority of the traffic on the WAN links is still CAP WAP Data traffic! Could someone shed some light on this issue? I would expect to see CAP WAP control traffic, but not CAP WAP Data traffic??

Cheers,

First off, do you have FlexConnect local switching enabled on the WLAN? If the ap is in FlexConnect mode, did you specify the WLAN to vlan mapping?

Hi Scott,

Yes, we have FlexConnect local switching enabled on the WLAN and we specified the WLAN to VLAN mappings.

Are you centrally switching any SSID's? Maybe like guest?

No all SSIDs at the remote campus are being locally switched. Also, it appears the CAP WAP data traffic is only from the controller out to the APs. There is none from the APs to the controller. If a wireless client at another location who's traffic is centrally switched is communicating with a wireless client who's traffic is locally switched, will this traffic be encapsulated back to the client?

You would probably need to sniff the traffic to see exactly what is being sent from the WLC to the AP.

After sniffing the traffic, it appears to be multicast traffic. Should the WLC be sending multicast traffic via CAP WAP to these FlexConnect APs at our remote site?

yes, if AP multicast mode is unicast wlc forwards downlink multicast data to flex APs. and not when it is set to multicast.

on wlc prune unwanted vlans that sends multicast.

on wlc, set ap mode to multicast. also, using interface acl block multicast hitting wlc wired interface that are originating from wired infrastrcture.
