Creating Wireless SSIDs C9800-CL Controller

Hi all,

Can you please assist with how to create 2 SSIDs on C9800-CL

I have created 1 SSID Admim-HQ, and it works fine. The problem start when I add a 2nd SSID named Architect-Dept. These two departments are located in the same building and use the same APs. The goal is to have two separate SSIDs for these two departments.

I created my SSIDs Using the advanced workflow, and I only created the mandatory tags WLAN Profile, Policy Profile, and Policy Tag. The other options I left them at default.

WLAN Profile: Admim-HQ
Description: For Admin-HQ

Policy Pofile: Admin-HQ
Description: For Admin-HQ

Policy tag: Admim-HQ
Description: For Admin-HQ

Lastly, I will add the APs into
Tags APs
Policy: Admim-HQ
Site: default-site-tag
RF: default-rf-tag

Second SSID

WLAN Profile: Architect-Dept
Description: For Architect-Dept

Policy Pofile: Architect-Dept
Description: For Architect-Dept

Policy tag: Architect-Dept
Description: For Architect-Dept

Lastly, I will add the APs into
Tags APs
Policy: Architect-Dept
Site: default-site-tag
RF: default-rf-tag

Once this is done it's either both SSIDs disappear or I only see the one created last. With one SSID everything works perfectly fine, so I am not sure where I am going wrong and how should I fix it.

Thanks in advanced for any assistance to resolve this issue - it's been 3 days now trying to figure out this.

Patrick

Policy tag: Admim-HQ
Policy tag: Architect-Dept
-> that's where you go wrong, you can only assing a single policy tag to an access point

you must add both WLAN profiles to the same policy tag
WLAN Profile: Admim-HQ
WLAN Profile: Architect-Dept
Policy tag: Main_Building -> assign this tag to the access point

Hi @pieterh,

Thank you so much for your quick response. So, do I have to do it like the below?

WLAN Profile: Admim-HQ
Description: For Admin-HQ

Policy Pofile: Admin-HQ
Description: For Admin-HQ

Policy tag: Main_Building

WLAN Profile: Architect-Dept
Description: For Architect-Dept

Policy Pofile: Architect-Dept
Description: For Architect-Dept

Policy tag: Main_Building

Thank you very much

Regards,

Patrick

yes you can
some remark: don't make it more complex than necessary
if you do create two policy-profiles then you are set for different profile configuration per department in the future
but if the only difference is the SSID name, (same method of authentication etc.) then a single policy profile may be sufficient
after all if both policy-profiles need to be the same you need to guard that every change is made to both profiles

WLAN Profile: Admin-HQ          Policy Pofile: MyCompanies-profile
WLAN Profile: Architect-Dept   Policy Pofile: MyCompanies-profile
Policy tag: Main_Building

Hi @pieterh,

Once again thank you. I will provide feedback tomorrow.

Patrick

Hi @pieterh

I'm sorry I didn't come back with feedback on time. I ended up not completing that task. I encountered some issues, outside of this work but am now prepared to complete it. Please review the attached document and provide feedback on where I may be going wrong, as I could not get it working today. Feel free to make any necessary edits to the document.

Thank you in advance!

As said before, you can assign only ONE policy tag to your access point
if all access points need to transmit both WLAN's, you only need to create a single policy tag

Adding Policy Tag
Name [Admin_HQ]                     Name [Admin_HQ]

Description [For Architect_Dept] Description [For Architect_Dept]

Tag APs
Policy [Admin_HQ]                     Policy [Architect_Dept]

Site [default-tag]                        Site [default-tag]

RF [default]                                RF[default]

Hi @pieterh

Thank you very much for your help. I will be implementing your suggestions on Monday next week and will confirm once it's done. Your support is greatly appreciated.

  - Note that during configuring attempts on the C9800-CL controller , you can always have the intended configuration reviewed and analyzed with the CLI command : show tech wireless , feed the output into https://cway.cisco.com/wireless-config-analyzer/ , look for advisories and of course correct all errors if indicated  (red flagged)  , the usage of the tool is strongly advised ,
