Effect of Renaming a WLC

We need to rename our 4404 Wireless LAN Controllers.  Would like to know if renaming via the GUI (change name in the Controller / General tab and then Apply) will cause the WLC to reload.  Also wondering about the best way to push the name change to the APs (High Availability) - we are not using WCS.

no, chaning the WLC name does not require a reboot.  If you are not using WCS, then the CLI is going to be your best friend.

config ap primary-base < WLC Name> < AP Name >

you can build this in excel or word, then paste it in.

System name change doen't require reboot however RRM doesn't work if you're using code 7.0.116.0 or earlier. However it works as expected 7.2.103.0 which is not applicable to 4404.

how to verify?

before and after name change run the below show and debug command on WLC.

WLC>show sysinfo

WLC>show advanced 802.11a group

WLC>debug airewave-director packet enabled

sysinfo will immediately reflect the name however the debug would still use the old name, if you see this behaviour then yes you need to reboot the wlc to have wlc reflect new name for RRM to work.

Good info Saravanan. +5.

But what is the relation between the WLC name and RRM? Why RRM stops if the WLC name got changed?

Thanks.

On my WLC the GUI has "WLClocation-4" and the command line has Cisco Controller. Do this affect SNMP?

No, it does not.  The prompt is locally significant and does not go anywhere.

Renaming the prompt affects nothing.

What is HA option configured on the affected AP.

you can try this command to force the AP to join specific WLC.

AP#test capwap controller ip
