Can anyone tell me how I can deploy Cisco 1230 Access points on the same subnet in a Cisco network that has different vlans in each closet? I realize that I can trunk a single VLAN to each closet switch (where my access points are connected) , but I have redundant trunks to each clost switch and by doing this I could potentially create a spanning-tree problem. I have thought about NOT putting the wireless vlan on every trunk (just 1 of the 2 trunks to each closet). I would sacrafice redundancy in this case, but other than purchasing WLSM for my core 6500's I don't know how to accomplish this. In my current environment my laptops roam between access points and must go through the DHCP process. This causes about a 5-10 second interruption.

We are already doing several VLANs on a single access point. My question is actually more of an architecture question. I want to be able to do layer 2 roaming in a layer 3 network. I am also not ready to shell out big $ on WLSM modules in a 6500 switch.

I also have a Enterprise "Campus" network design, Karl, and have also run into the problem you are describing (How to enable layer 3 roaming without being able to get the budget for the WLSM).

Option 1: If you have the right IOS, you could try Proxy Mobile IP, here is a link:

Option 2: Involves $$$, but you could look at Cisco's new 4400-series Wireless LAN Controllers and Lightweight Access Point Protocol deployment. Very neat, and provides roaming and centralized control. URL follows:

Other than that I don't believe there is a way to enable layer 3 roaming without the WLSM.

Thanks for the update. I was just wondering if anyone out there has already dealt with this.

It is pretty hard to look at the WLSM since we are running the Windows XP client that does not support the Arionet extensions for the fast roaming when you are trying to invest for the future.

It seems like the writing is on the wall as far as direction with Layer 3 roaming and the LWAPP features. You have to consider VOIP over WiFi as long range goals for large offices.
