Hello,
We are wanting to expand our wireless network and we currently have a 5508 controller with 150 AP's. We will be adding another 100 AP's soon, and we were thinking of possibly adding an HA controller or a second controller. Current AP's are almost all 1142's with about 10 1131's. The new AP's will most likely be 2602i's.
I see that the new 5760's are out, and i like the fact that they are based on IOS, but I don't think I can justify the cost of that controller for a small/medium deployment like ours.
An HA 5508 controller was what I was leaning towards, only for the fact that it would be a simple design and I would not have to deal with configuration of two controllers.
Any recommendations?
Does anyone know if the 5508's will be EOL soon?
Thanks,
Dan.

The 5508's will not be EOL anytime soon. As far as HA... Not very stable and you are better of getting another 5508 with AP licenses. You can search the forums for WLC HA issues if you want so you can understand what others are running into.

Hi,
you can order it as HA-SKU part number, that comes with zero license, and its made for HA.
the license is used when you orignally have 2 5508 and you want to migrate to HA,

Scott,
I did some HA searches and I found one thread you were discussing HA in. I see that 7.4 is out, and has some fixes, but it doesn't look that good yet.
Do you know if the 5508's will be upgraded to release 8? If so do you know if it will be IOS based?

Do you know if the 5508's will be upgraded to release 8?
You mean if 5508 will support firmware 8.0? Yes it will.
If so do you know if it will be IOS based?
No.

There is still some HA bugs on 7.4.... Just be aware!

Do you have a link to known HA issues with 5508?
Thanks.

Wow..... I would talk to your local Cisco SE for that or search the forums for ones that are published. I don't want to break any NDA's with Cisco. The bug toolkit can offer some along with the release notes.
Thanks,
Scott

Yes, Controller WLC5508 can support upto 500 AP’s so they can proceed with the HA deployment. I have not found any document related to WLC5508 End of Sale for any near dates.
Thanks.
