I have AP Groups configured and working fine on my primary WLC. I can find no way to add APs to the AP Groups that I have defined on my redundant WLCs.(short of associating the APs to each of the redundant controllers, adding the APs to the AP groups etc.)
1 X Primary = WLC 4404 v4.0.206
3 X Redundant = WLC 4102 v3.2.193.5

Before you configure the AP Group VLANs feature, you must configure the WLC for basic operation and register the LAPs to the WLC. Refer URL

The AP Group Name assigned to an AP is one of the config parameters the AP stores locally in NVRAM and carries with it to a new controller. So, as long as the AP Group Name is the same on the redundant WLCs as it is on the primary, you're golden.
