Hi Experts ,

I have unfied wireless LAN and we have nealry 200 windows users with 5500 controller and 3500 AP's .

However we have Ipad for some of the users recently who are facing issue with wireless bandwidth ...they are getting around 1-2 mbps ...not sure why ?

Do i need to modify anything in controller for this issue ?

Thanks ,

Vinod

Please do let me know if I need to modify anything ....

Hi Vinod,

I can see few modifications you have to do. Keep in mind thess changes will  disturb users and therefore you  have to do this during a maintenance outage window.

1. At the moment you have enable all low-data rates which is not a good thing. disable all data rates below 11Mbps.  You can do that using following CLI commands on WLC (you can do this via GUI as well)

config 802.11b disable network

config 802.11b rate disabled 1

config 802.11b rate disabled 2

config 802.11b rate disabled 5.5

config 802.11b rate disabled 6

config 802.11b rate disabled 9

config 802.11b rate disabled 11

config 802.11b rate mandatory 12

config 802.11b enable network

config 802.11a disable network

y

config 802.11a rate disabled 6

config 802.11a rate disabled 9

config 802.11a enable network

2. You have disabled WMM on your WLAN network, which mean your client cannot get 802.11n speeds even though controller is supported these data rates. So you have to enable it.

config wlan disable 4

config wlan wmm allow 4

config wlan enable 4

3. Under WLAN security you have enable WPA/TKIP & WPA2/AES. I would leave it only for WPA2/AES. If client associate WPA/TKIP, then they can't get 802.11n speeds. To support 11n speeds you should have WPA2/AES & WMM enabled.

Once you do this test it again & see. You should have improved results

With QoS, bandwidth can be managed more efficiently across LANs, which includes WLANs and WANs. This is how QoS provides enhanced and reliable network service:

Cisco Unified Wireless Products support WMM, a QoS system based on the IEEE 802.11e draft that has been published by the Wi-Fi Alliance.

The controller supports four QoS levels:

Platinum/Voice—Ensures a high quality of service for voice over wireless.

Gold/Video—Supports high-quality video applications.

Silver/Best Effort—Supports normal bandwidth for clients. This is the default setting.

Bronze/Background—Provides the lowest bandwidth for guest services.

Hi ,

Thank you so much for replying with all the details ....

I will go ahead schedule the maintenance window for making above changes and revert you with the result.

No worries... if that works rate our responses & mark this post as "answered" .....

Hi ,

Unfortunately we are getting the same speed i.e.1 Mbps .

Is there any settings to be changed in iPad devices ....

Thanks

Try to download a file from your local LAN to a wireless device. That will prove the connectivity speed from wireless client to AP. In the above we do not know where the bottleneck is.

Anyway when you getting the above low performance please get the output of "show client detail " of your WLC to see the data rate client is connnected.

Hi Vinod,

As you can see your iPad client is connected m7 (MCS7) data rates. Since iPad support single spacial stream this would be around 65Mbps. Even if your AP support multiple streams (2 in case of 3502) because of client limitation you cannot go anything above MCS7. (See below chart for detail)

In conclusion, your iPad connect to your wireless at least 65Mbps. Therefore it is not the bottleneck. If you doing this testing with internet, better to check what is the throughput you get on that service. Definetely issue is not wireless speed client get connected.

Without enabling WMM & WPA2/AES, you will never get these 802.11n data rates.

Hope it clears

Regards

Install iPerf App onto your iPad, setup PC as a server on your LAN, see what speed you get from WiFi. You may get supprised.
