C9800-CL Datasheet mention compatibility with ESXi 7 but not higher that it.

Our customer adcquire this Controller and last week the DC Team just jump to ESXi 8.0.

  - It won't be compatible then , officially , it may work, but if there is no confirmation for that platform in official documents then operational behavior can not be guaranteed as correct in all circumstances , which is important to consider ,

It's specific to the IOS version - you must refer to the release notes for the version of IOS-XE you're running.  But agreed that it looks like 7.0 is the latest they support as even 17.11 still only supports up to 7.0:

So you'll have to keep that machine on 7.0 until Cisco release a version which supports 8.0

You should be fine with anything higher as you can specify the compatibility versions in ESXi.  Why not just spin one up and test it?
