Migration - WLC 7.4 to Virtual WLC 8

Hello everyone,

I need to migrate from wlc 7.4 to Virtual wlc 8, and i have 2 doubts:

first: if i download the config file from the 7.4 and then it is  uploaded  to the 8, this will run? or there is something else i should do.

two: i need to install the licence of the 7.4 to the 8, how can i do that?

1. Keep in mind vWLC only support FlexConnect mode AP. So if you current deployment is local mode you need to consider the features you use & whether any limitation on those with FlexConnect. So I would change AP mode to FlexConnect in current WLC environment and proper vlan mapping ,  local switching on SSID, change AP configured switch port as trunk port,etc before migration.Below should give you and idea.

2. Not sure you can re-host license to vWLC.

All my network it is working in flexconnect mode, thanks for the response.

With the configFile.cfg, what happen if i just download it from 7.4 and then it is uploaded to the 8?

No there won't be problems like that. Only thing is there may be few configuration syntax may be different.

Is it possible to upgrade to current system to 8.0 first & then take a backup & migrate to vWLC. In that way you should not have any thing to worry about.

Hi Rasika,

I implemented an vwlc 8 to test before to implement the real one, when i upload the config.cfg to the vwlc, everyting seens fine an then reload, but i can´t loggin into, i do not accept my credentials. This line in the config.cfg :

config mgmtuser add encrypt adm 1 c8e72b7923896f0191448a49ad40b9a8 2d56729c3523e36a7827274a0917bb48637644a4 16 0dd106b4f5ba76c01ebd2523a972befc0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 read-write

Congratulation that you done the migration. But for user/pass use the following command to reset the password for already created users from controller console.

config mgmtuser password
