I have some general questions about MSE. I am trying to establish what exactly the tech is and if it is a viable solution for a possible project. I am tasked to establish a method to provide mobile application users on a college campus a means of way-finding, "Where am I," and a way of knowing where other users are in the vicinity(i.e. in a particular building). I am not an I.T./Networking guru, I am actually a software developer. My specific questions are:
1. Do the access points have to be a particular piece of hardware. Do they have to be Cisco AP's?
2. Is there a way to communicate to the phones directly? In this application, we would have to know that John Smith is located at some position. I'm not quite sure if this system just monitors mobile activity on the network or if you could talk to the devices as well.
3. I'm assuming the mobile devices would have to be connected to the network, is this true? Or is this all possible with the phones having wifi on but no local connection?
4. What kind of hardware is necessary? What is a general cost?
Any information would be appreciated?
