NCS restore problem

Hi all

I am having trouble restoring NCS from backup.... Old database seems to be broken so I really need to restore.

NCS was in HA pair which broke and has been removed. HA peer is shut down.

NCS version is 1.3 and I tried restore few times getting failure:

- initially after step 7 out of 9 I got a message that DB can't be stopped

- in future attempts after step 3 out of 9 restore just stops with no error

I think I may have to create new VM and restore my backup there but this may not be possible today.

Is there any other way to wipe out NCS from the VM and install it again + then try restore?

If I restore on new VM would I have to relicense?

regards

Yes you would have to rehost the license. If you have issues with a restore, you can try to bring up another VM, but if the backup is bad, the restore will fail. I like to take a snapshot soni can revert back as that saved me many times:)

You can try this command:

application reset-config

thanks, application-reset did not work  so I try DB reset before I restore

# ncs db reinitdb

-All data will be lost. Do you wish to continue? (y/n)

y

-Creating a new, empty database. This may take 10 to 20 minutes

but its been like that for 2h now... is this normal to take so long?

Can I convert Secondary to Primary? Secondary is now switched off but I think its got DB few days out of date.

Somehow they ended up in Secondary Active and Primary Alone status and that is how we got into this trouble as Primary DB got corrupted during faillback.

I don't think it takes that long at all. Did you shut down the NCS service prior to doing that? I never run HA on NCS but if the primary is taken down the backup should take over the primary role. If that doesn't work, then it's really broke.

Bring up another VM and see if it works or not. Rehosting a license doesn't take long at all and you can at least work in the existing and have a new one ready for testing.

I am now struggling with restore on new VM

have you seen this before

Restore may require a restart of application services. Continue? (yes/no) [yes] ?

Initiating restore.  Please wait...

Stage 1 of 9: Transferring backup file ...

  -- complete.

Stage 2 of 9: Decrypting backup file ...

  -- complete.

Stage 3 of 9: Unpacking backup file ...

  --complete.

ERROR: The backup file you are trying to restore is not valid (Invalid backup file version) .Please recreate the backup and retry the restore

Did you do an NCS application or full backup?.

I am also facing the same problem when trying to restore the database from NCS 1.1.3.2 to brand new Prime Infrastructure 1.3.0.20 VM (as I understand that there is no way to perform inline upgrade from NCS 1.1.3.2 to PI 2.1). I used NCS application backup and restore and it stuck after Step 3 with the error message:

ERROR: The backup file you are trying to restore is not valid (Invalid backup file version) .Please recreate the backup and retry the restore

Do we need to rehost the license prior to restoring the database? Really appreciate your reply. Thanks

If your on the same code train, you can perform a restore. If you moving to PI 2.1, you can rehost the license you have, but might be better if you have SmartNet on the license. You bring up a new VM with PI 2.1 and provide TAC license with the new vUDI. You can export your maps and restore to the new, but that is it. You will have to reconfigure any other setting and it templates you had.
