need to replace WAP150 in a simple configuration

Hi, I'm currently using the WAP150 access point in this simple configuration.

The AP is connected to a PC with a LAN cable and a wireless client is connected to the AP. The three devices have all static IP addresses and there is nothing else in the network. The AP in this network is only used to connect the wireless client to the PC and it is configured from the PC using its web interface.

Now I need to replace the WAP150 with a newer model.

I'm testing the Cisco Business 140C but it seems not to work in this configuration because it needs a dhcp server in the network; Furthermore its configuration interface is not available on the wired port and it has a very long boot time (all the system is switched off and on very frequently).

Could anyone suggest another model that could be used in my configuration? Thank you very much

Hi

I suggest you setup a DHCP server on the machine you´re connecting to the AP. Is quite simple install and run a DHCP in windows machine.

One problem you may have is if you do not have a power supply for this AP.  Then, you are going to need a PoE device like a switch to power this up. If you have a power supply for this AP, then, it is easier.

Once the AP gets an IP address, you can use the IP and access it using a web browser and setup everthing.

Take a look on this steps:

Dear Flavio,

thank you for your answer but i don't think a dhcp server would be a good solution for me. I'm not dealing with a single machine but this configuration is supposed to be replicated many times and I like to keep things as simple as possible. The dhcp server would also not solve the other problem because I do need to configure the access point from the PC.

I think you already know what the requirements are to configure and setup the new AP's.  Maybe you need to look for an alternative access point that meets your requirements.

  • needs a dhcp server in the network
  • configuration interface is not available on the wired port

Hi

What I meant is to setup a temporary DHCP server on the machine. Once you get an IP address you access the Access Point using the IP address it got and them, using the web interface, change from DHCP to static.  That was the idea.

Hi Flavio,

I already tried that. You can assign a static IP to the AP but, if you disconnect the dhcp server and you restart the AP, the AP will not complete the boot sequence and will not create the wi-fi network. To make the AP fully operating again you need to reconnect the dhcp server.

I'm almost sure the AP140 is not the right device for my application. What I need is a suggestion for a good replacement meeting my requirements. As Scott suggested I'm posting this question in the Small Business Wireless forum.

Thank you very much for your help
