Problems configuring a Cisco AIR-AP2802E-E-K9C

Hi all,

New to the forum and looking for some help setting up and configuring a Cisco AP.

So, I bought a AIR-AP2802E-E-K9C, well it says that on the outer box but the sticker on the AP actually says its a AIR-AP2802E-E-K9 model.

So i watched a few youtube video's on youtube which suggest that when the AP powers up it's supposed to show a "CiscoAirProvisioning" SSID, but mine show no SSID and the status light just jumps between Red & Green as if it's waiting to talk to an upstream controller.

So i read a different forum post which suggest it was a potential POE issue, but i've tried connecting it to a 30w POE injector and connecting directly to a Cisco 2960x but it does the same thing.

So what am i missing here, as the AP came with no instruction and i've struggled to find a quick start guide online.

When booting i did notice that the firmware states that it's using Barbados firmware image, which i expected it to say something about mobility express.

I've tried manually configuring it with a static IP form the CLI, which said it saved but after reboot the console just says "Waiting for Preferred uplink IP configuration" and seems to have lost the Static ip i configured and the SSID i configured.

Can someone please help as i need to get this setup urgently.

I've attached the console output from boot in a text file.

Cheers,

Rich.

Maybe you can use a Raspberry PI temporary, but I would not do anything in the production environment just in case.

Rich,

Make sure the AP can reach the gateway you configured. If it doesn't receive an arp response for the gw it won't bring up the interface. If the interface doesn't come up it cant look for other WLCs. If it cant look for other WLCs it will not move to mobility express mode. Since it's in your lab just set the gw to be the switch it's connected to or you could even use the IP of your laptop assuming they are in the same bcast domain.

If you configure the DHCP scope on a L3 switch there is a way to configure an exclusion. This is also the same if you setup DHCP on a Windows dhcp server. What are configuring DHCP on?

Hi Scott,

Just using the DHCP functionality built into the Cisco Air-2802E access point.  which allows a whitelist and a blacklist, but it's a bit glitchy in that the whitelist is a bit pointless as it will hand out DHCP irrespective of a device Mac address being included in the whitelist. e.g. it doesn't matter if i use a whitelist as everything will get an IP unless it's Mac address is in the Blacklist.

I had assumed that if i create a whitelist, that only devices in the whitelist would get an IP.

Looks like i'll have to spin up a Windows DHCP server to get the granular access, as i don't want to start messing around with Layer 3 on my core network.

Cheers,

Richard.

Rich,

Grab a stand-alone switch if you have and stage these AP’s. I don’t know how your environment is and if there is any alerts if dhcp response are detected or not, but you are better off playing it safe. I have always staged access points to make sure there are no DOA’s and pre configure everything prior to putting them in production.

One thing you should also note is that Mobility Express is something you will have to move away from and is eventually going away. With your 2802’s, you can either get a used 2504 or get a new 3504 and use a controller. The 9800 controllers is IOS-XE and is the new direction Cisco going with. There is also an EWC 91x0 AP that can be used as a controller and does support your current 2800 AP’s.

Just keep this in mind since this is a new setup for you.
