Is it possible to restrict the wireless transmission range? If so, how granular can it be set? For instance, if I want to allow reception only within a 50 to 100 foot radius of the base station (assuming an open field environment). Will lowering the power output affect the throughput bandwidth?

The Cisco Aironet BSE340 and BSM340 base stations were fixed at 30 mW. Unfortunately, since they are end-of-life, there is little documentation available for them, with the best being http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps441/products_tech_note09186a00800944a7.shtml
Cisco Aironet Access Point products are adjusted through software controls, and are usually in fixed increments throughout their operable range of 30 mW-1mW for the 340 series, and 100mW-1mW for the 350, 1100, and 1200 series. More detailed information about adjusting the radio power settings can be found in each product's configuration guide from http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/index.html

To manage the propagation of radio waves, turn the transmitter down to a desired level. As long as the receivers (and their transmitters) in the smaller coverage area are receiving a clean signal, bandwidth will not be effected. Most humans can whisper just as clearly as they can shout or speak at an average volume; the radios work similarly. The best assistance and advise will come from a wireless network designer who can survey your unique site, make you aware of possible impediments to good RF transmission, and assist with configuration of the products for the implementation you want.

In reference to Cisco Wireless base stations, in what increments does the transmitter adjust? For instance, 1/10 mW, 1/100 mW, 1/1000 mW? Is the transmitter adjusted via software, or is it a physical hardware adjustment?
