Switch over between APs not happening Automatically.

I have installed a couple of 3600 APs and a few 1552 Aps all controlled by a WLC 5508.

The problem I am experiencing is that when a client is moving around when connected to the WIFI the connection does not switch automatically to the next AP. This means that a client could be sited right under an AP but not connected to it. The client is then forced to disconnect and connect manually and that is when he is able to pick signal from that particular AP.

What could be causing this. Are there settings that I need to change on the controller.

Hi,

there are only few things you can do :

Fact is that,  the client decides on which AP it will join or not.

What you can do is:

1. Check or Tune the power levels in RRM so the wireless cells are not to big and not to small either

2. Disable the lower data rates because lower data rates travel further which (again) makes the cell size bigger (and also a lot slower!)

3. Enable WMM / QBSS so the client can see the client count and channel utilization information send by the AP's and use this information in the roaming process

4. Check the correct positioning of APs.......Or it will be good if  you run a wireless survey throughout the Campus/Building.

Also make sure that, you are running a stable software version on WLC.

Hi there,

We had this issue when testing new devices. The devices were a cheaper device and their wireless chipset were home grade not enterprise. This meant they would hold on to the AP they connected to initially even when roaming throughout the floor of a building with more appropriate WAPs nearer to them. They even lost connectivity rather than connect to another AP.

Some tweaking of the device settings made them a little more movement-friendly, but the problem was not completely removed.

Kind regards

Rob
