The trouble with mesh.... AP2700 & WLC5508 (r8.0.115)

Hello!

We are having trouble with an Mesh-installation where we are using CAP2702e in weather-proof enclosures and a WLC5508 running r8.0.115. The APs is connected to multiplexers/filters that divide the signal to 2,4GHz Omni-antennas for the clients and to 5GHz panel-antennas for the backhaul.

One RAP is mounted on 12m height and should have 3 MAPs connected to it in an "A-form", the two APs (MAP1 & MAP2) are at the end of the As "legs" are at 500m and AP3 in the middle (A "crossbeam") is at 300m. All use channel 104.

The first RAP is installed on the roof-edge of a building and the MAPs on masts. There is also a second RAP on the same building as the first but on another wall 90 degrees removed and using another channel and another BGN, this RAP has a single MAP connected to  it which have no problems. This pair use channel 100.

All of the first three MAPs share a BGN and the MAPs have "preferred parent" configured to RAP-1. All three MAPs have an SNR betwen 28dB and 32dB. When we do a link-test MAP3 gets a PER of 1% and  MAP1 & MAP2 gets a PER of >50% !!

Also, clients connected to the MAPs on the 2,4GHz-radio says that they experience excellent RSSI and high data-rate but their ping-times vary wildly between 10-15ms up to 1000ms ......

Another issue is that the MAP1 and MAP2 very often will "switch" to RAP-2, which is using another BGN! So, any bright ideas on where to tweak and change?? Mesh-distance is configured globally to 3000ft (1000m).

Best Regards

Hi Göran,

Do you have CleanAir enabled? if so, is MAP1 and MAP2 reporting interference? Are the reported SNR levels through the link test Min, Max or Average levels?

You may have intermittent interference on channel 104. MAP1 and MAP2 would be joining RAP2 for a reason. Unless you enable 'strict BGN matching' they will join any available RAP using a 'default' BGN in order to avoid being stranded. This is called 'maintenance' mode and does not allow client connectivity.

Hi Brett!

Aplogies for the late response, vaction times in sweden for first me and also the customer ....  :-/

CleaAir is enabled and the SNR values are the Average as reported in the link-test.

One question for everybody... Mesh and MIMO-antennas? Good or bad?....  Is the recommendation to use "single-port" (single-element) antennas or is the math in the sw good enough to handle fifi-links via MIMI-antennas? I have heard both ways argued before.

Best regards

Goran
