Why should I configure 802.1p- with 802.11e-values on the WLC?

Hi everybody,

does anybody know, why we have to configure in the WLC under Wireless - Profiles the profiles per default with the 802.11e UP values and not with the 802.1p Values?

Is this a mistake in GUI description?

If I configure the profiles with the default values, then I get always the 802.11e UP values:

6 for Platinum (VO)

5 for Gold (VI)

3 for Silver (BE)

1 for Bronze (BK)

In the VoWLAN 4.1 Design Guide (Page 2-25, Table 2-7) and also in the Enterprise Mobility 4.1 Design Guide (Page 5-23, Table 5-7) there are Translation Tables, and they are different. Witch is the right one?

Thanks for your comments in advance!

Hi Tomas,

Simply because 802.11e (IEEE) & Cisco AVVID 802.1p (IETF) are having two different traffic classifcation rules. Therefore when configuring this parameter always think of 802.11e values & WLC/AP will do necessary translations to correctly pass the traffic to wired side of the network as per Cisco AVVID standard (which is the standard your wired network configured for).

For example if you configure Voice Profile (802.11p value set to 6). This is telling AP any packets coming from an end station with 802.11e UP of 6 is voice packets. (in the reverse direction if any VOICE packets come to AP from controller has to set 802.11e value of 6 in wireless frames when send to end station).

Regarding the tables, yes I understand they are different & I think VoWLAN 4.1 is correct.( I think AF21 802.1p value 2 should map to 802.1e UP of 3, which is not the case in Mobility Design Guide table. Same goes with AF11). Correct answer should come from who design these guides.
