WLC 6.018 to 7.098 Upgrade Strategies

JOHN SAINATO

We have 3 WLCs running 6.0.188 that Cisco tells us we need to upgrade to 7.098 to fix a client connectivity issue.  We have 64 access points  all of which connect to our primary WLC (WLC1) the secondary controller (WLC2) is presently only being used for failover for (WLC1) we have a 3rd controller (WLC3) which is in our DMZ acting as an anchor controller for our guest network.

I have two questions;

1)      I need to know if anyone has seen any issues with 7.098 that would make us not want to upgrade.  And

2)      2) In the above configuration does anyone have any recommendations as to upgrade strategies? Secondary first roll all APs then Primary??

Thank you for your support.  I have several other sites to do once this one is upgraded so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

John

I can't tell you which is the "lesser of two evils" because I don't know what your network is like.  (And besides, I'm an "upgrade" Nazi in our place.)

My practice is to upgrade the backup controllers (i, e. tertiary and then secondary controller) and finally upgrading the primary controller.  Make sure your bootstrap (.aes) is also up to date.

Also, if you have a WCS i'm pretty sure you will have to upgrade that to version 7 as well.  Just read the release notes as well on the new version of code you want to run so your prepared for any surprises that might occur.
