Does anyone know the difference between the Backup Version and the Field Recovery Image version of the IOS on a WLC? I recently upgraded my 5508 WLC to the newest code, and the backup version is infact the previous active version I was running but the Field Recovery Image version is now the previous backup version. I was just wondering what the differences were. Is the FRIV a backup to the backup? Thanks.
Chris.

The Field Recovery Image is what you get when you interrupt the bootup process. The Backup image, as you've noted, is the last image you upgraded from.
So if you are running 6.0.196.0, and upgrade to 7.2.130.0, 6.0.196.0 will be the 'backup' image. If you hit the CLI and config boot backup. On the next reboot the WLC will come up on 6.0.19.60(though it is still considered backup and 7.2 will be 'primary')

Correct. And the other options that can be done from that menu.

Stephen,
Thank you for the reply. So to clarify, the FRIV is the image that is used when you hit Escape during bootup in the CLI in order to change the bootable image from the primary to the backup and vice versa? Thanks for the verification.

Steve,
Thanks a lot for the clarification. I really couldnt find any literature on the differences, so your input is much appreciated. Cheers!
