Are NCS540s (medium) noisy?

Hi,

I'm testing a new NCS540 and I have found that is very noisy.

I checked the fan speed and it seems quite high but I don't know if it's normal or not.

===================================================================================================
Fan speed (rpm)
Location FRU Type FAN_0 FAN_1 FAN_2 FAN_3 FAN_4
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

0/FT0 N540-X-BB-FAN 21660 21480 21600 21540 21630

What's the normal speed for them?

Thanks,

Al

This is from a NCS540 not a NCS540X.
What does the output of "admin show env temp" say?
Are there any environmental alarms in the output of "admin show alarms" ?

Hi mivens,

thank you for your reply.

Show env temp says that everything is ok.

Moreover, there are no alarms.

It is so strange because there are no cables connected and no configs. It is only connected via MGMT interface.

But fan speeds are very high.

The NCS540X is side-to-side airflow whereas the NCS540 is front-to-back. So the fantrays are very different and therefore the normal fan speed may be as well.

If you are just testing, you could try the command "environment raise-fan-speed 100" from admin and see if they go faster.

For the NCS540 in my lab, that increases the speed to 23k rpm, similar to your chassis.

sysadmin-vm:0_RP0(config)# environment raise-fan-speed 100
sysadmin-vm:0_RP0(config)# commit

   Admin mode has been deprecated.

There is no chance to configure that.

RP/0/RP0/CPU0:NCS540(config)#environment ?
air-filter                       chassis air-filter status
altitude                       Altitude of the chassis in meters
chassis-door-alarm    Control chassis door alarm
min-fan-speed           Min default fan speed in PWM (the speed cannot go lower, but can go higher based on environmental conditions)

Configure environment min fan speed not available in Cisco NCS 560 version7. 5.2.pl help.. Fan is making huge noise and RPM is above 25000

I suffer from the same problem. Has a solution been identified??

Hi,
I moved the NCS to another rack space to avoid proximity with other routers with different airflow. Things are better now.
