The IP Communicator has been a solid product and rocked the Cisco 7900 IP phone interface for entirely too long. Now that we are rolling out 8841/61 phones across our enterprise, the 7900 UI is a bit long in the tooth.
User adoption and experience of the software is key -- and it's important to maintain a similar experience for our users when they are in one of our 20 offices or working from home.
The UI on the IP communicator needs revamped to match the new UI of other Cisco phones in the enterprise. It's difficult managing training/documentation for different looking communication devices.

There are no plans to re-skin or update the UI for iPCommunicator. Our goal is for Jabber to ultimately replace iPCommunicator however we need to close the core feature gap first before we can do this

This is disappointing. Will the Jabber replacement be able to register natively to CUCM as simply as the IP Communicator?
Or will it require the Cisco IM/Presence backend infrastructure and other requirements? How about Expressway? The IP Communicator is so simple to use.

You can use Jabber in phone mode too without IM/P. In Phone mode it can work with expressway too.
