I am running Cisco Mobile on my iPhone and have it working, but cannot get the app to stay running in the background. Anyone have any insight on this?

8.0 doesn't support multitasking, 8.1 does however:
Cisco Mobile Release 8.0 runs on iOS 4.2 but does not support multitasking.

8.1 is not in the app store? So how do i get that?

Check for 'Cisco Jabber'. It's basically Cisco Mobile for iPhone 8.1.
