installed jabber on two laptops.
when connected to LAN works OK
when connected with VPN from home with "use my computer for calls" :
i can make calls by typing the number in the search bar and receive call OK.
but not call from contact list or searched list - the dial button is missing. and "show profile" does not show the number.
also the name of the caller is displayed from the "

I think you have more or less already given the answer; you cant connect to you AD server through the VPN. check your access lists and routing between VPN client and AD.
(check wireshark when on VPN)

tried wireshark
i dont see the client trying to connect to AD server
i see it using:
CUCM server
Unity Connection Server
Presense Server

Is this on a windows machine, part of the domain when on VPN?
also you might want to include/attach the Jabber problem report
