expecting digits while performing other tasks

Has anyone written a script that expects input from the user while it performs other tasks? This seems pretty simple, but no obvious built in function comes to mind.

Can you elaborate a little more on exactly what you are wanting to do?

Sure, for example, while queued, be expecting the user to press 1 to transfer to voicemail. However, also place the call on hold, and place other prompts.

I realize something like this might be achieved with the menu or get digits steps, but they don't seemed designed to do this. Maybe I'm just missing something.
