I want to work on a custom report with contact center express 5.x, where do I begin? what software module and resources do I need to get in order to start working on custom report?

You can create custom reports for the Historical Reporting tool using Cristal Reports, please check the following document that explains the process how to create and upload custom reports. This guide is for UCCX 7 but you can try to follow it and it may work.

I do not believe that you can create any customized reports with the standard reporting package within the UCCX. You have to engage a third party solution.
If you want to consider outsourcing to a third party for enhancing your reporting capabilities, please let me know. We greatly improve on the UCCX's historical & Real Time reporting features. Our custom module is very easy to manage and create.
