Using an sql database for query on a remote network

I`ve asked this question in UCCX but we may need to use UCCE for various reasons, can anyone point to a design guide or statement on any limitation of where you can place an external database for searching, data retrieval- RTD delays etc . Some people have suggested it can be placed anywhere but others have stated it needs to be on the same LAN- we would like to house the UCCE and external SQL database for queries in different locations on different networks

thanks

I used document in below link for configuring DB look up on external database. In my case, the external DB was in the same LAN.

But i came across one surprise during the implementation. When we use an SQL cluster, the ICM can search the DB which is available in default instance. ICM db worker services was not establishing connection with SQL cluster named instance.
