Im trying to test the following

SETUP;

-Two 5ks

- Two 2Ks

- one 2K has a dual home connection to each 5K

- the other 2K has a single home connection to the 5K

I have 3 connections from the 1K going to each 2K

Primary VSM is on ESX1

Standby VSM is on ESX2

the show mod on the 5K with fex 101 and 100 I see the following:

n1000v(200516105213107 Eth100/1/16     151     S I s       Nexus1000V    Eth4/3

n1000v(200516105213107 Eth100/1/17     151     S I s       Nexus1000V    Eth4/4

n1000v(200516105213107 Eth101/1/12     133     S I s       Nexus1000V    control0

n1000v(200516105213107 Eth101/1/13     147     S I s       Nexus1000V    Eth3/4

n1000v(200516105213107 Eth101/1/14     147     S I s       Nexus1000V    Eth3/3

on the 5k with only fex 100 i see the following:

n1000v(200516105213107 Eth100/1/16     140     S I s       Nexus1000V    Eth4/3

n1000v(200516105213107 Eth100/1/17     140     S I s       Nexus1000V    Eth4/4

My question is.. shouldnt I see Control0 on the both 5K

I dont see Ethe1001/1/15 when I do show cdp neighbor command.

I have verified that my trunks are confiugred correctly...

There's only one primary (active) VSM at a time.  It's traffic is being pinned to FEX 101 at this time, which is only visible to the single N5K northbound.

I assume you're using "channel-group mode on mac-pinning" on your uplink port profile correct (of you N1K)?

Robert

Thanks for your response Robert

Yes I have "mac-pinning" configured ( see below )

port-profile type ethernet system-uplink

  vmware port-group

  switchport mode trunk

  switchport trunk allowed vlan 1-3967,4048-4093

  channel-group auto mode on mac-pinning

  no shutdown

  system vlan 580-581

  state enabled

So I should be able to shutdown my Primary VSM and see the Standby become active with my current setup?

Yes.  Issue a "system switchover" on the VSM or just kill the power on the primary to initiate a switchover.

Robert

Nice!

It worked

I now see the other control 0 come up

n1000v(200516105213107 Eth100/1/15     150     S I s       Nexus1000V    control0

n1000v(200516105213107 Eth100/1/16     148     S I s       Nexus1000V    Eth4/3

n1000v(200516105213107 Eth100/1/17     148     S I s       Nexus1000V    Eth4/4

n1000v(200516105213107 Eth101/1/13     148     S I s       Nexus1000V    Eth3/4

n1000v(200516105213107 Eth101/1/14     148     S I s       Nexus1000V    Eth3/3

and Module 1 on my 1000v is now the standby.

Mod  Ports  Module-Type                       Model               Status

---  -----  --------------------------------  ------------------  ------------

1    0      Virtual Supervisor Module         Nexus1000V          ha-standby

2    0      Virtual Supervisor Module         Nexus1000V          active *

3    248    Virtual Ethernet Module           NA                  ok

4    248    Virtual Ethernet Module           NA                  ok

Thanks again Robert

Good stuff.   Another usefull command to keep in your back pocket is "show system redundancy status" - this will show you the sync status between your primary / standby VSM.  Always ensure it's fully in sync before doing any switchover testing or maintenance.

Regards,

Robert

Thank you!
