Vmotion/FT on dedicated nic

Hi,

I am attaching the configuration as below. We are using two physcial NIC for failover and all seems to be working fine.

Now I have a spare pnic on each host and I wanted to use it for vmotion and FT.

So I think it should work something like this.

Vlan 100

name vmotion

Port profile for vmkernel

port-profile type vethernet vmotion

vmware port-group

switchport mode access

switchport access vlan100

no shut

state enabled

Port Profile for pnic

port-profile type ethernet  pvmotion

vmware port-group

switchport mode trunk

Switchport trunk all vlan 100

no shut

state enabled

I have doubt on port profile for physical NIC.i.e pmotion.

Will it work like this?

Do I also need to allow rest of the vlan 1,10,51,52 through this?

On Upstream swiitch we need to allow only vlan 100 trunk connecting pnic of esx host?

Any other configuration you suggest for this.

Regards,

Sushil

Sushil,

Your config looks good. The only VLAN you need to have allowed on the pvmotion port-profile is the VLAN you use for VMotion.

One caveat. You cannot allow VLAN 100 on any other eth type port-profile. It has to be exclusive for just the pvmotion port-profile. Nexus 1000V cannot handle multiple eth port-profiles types carrying the same VLAN.

Also since you will be using these port-profiles for vmotion I would add "system vlan 100" to both the veth and eth port-profiles. You always want connectivity for your vmknic even if the VEM cannot talk to the VSM.

Thanks Louis.

I got it now.

1. I will only allow vlan 100 on pvmotion port-profile.On upstream switch I also need to allow vlan 100 on the conneting port to pvmotion vmnic. Here it has to be vlan100 only.Correct me if I am wrong.

2. On eth and veth port profile I just need to vlan100 as system vlan.Confusion is whether should I allow vlan100 on uplink port-profile.I do not think so.

Once it is done can I go ahead and use some other vlan 200 for FT on this nic?

Please share your inputs.

Sushil
