Never ending storage has been proposed specifically for artificial intelligence, where a cardinal rule is to never throw anything away. Prior to the rise of deep and machine learning and the ability to transverse huge data sets in a small amount of time, the cost/value ratio of never ending storage was seen as prohibitive.
