SMA & ESA on different versions

In testing we noticed that if our SMA was running a 7.x OS and the ESAs were upgraded to an 8.x version, the message tracking lost the Subject field (ie: all messages had no data in that field, thus we could not search based on subject).  We are planning a staged rollout for our next upgrade. 

Can anyone tell me if the issue above would be present if the SMA runs an 8.x OS and the ESAs are running 7.x?

If ESA was on 8.x the SMA would need to be on 8.x as well.

From the SMA on 8.x will run ESA on 7.x.  This is part of the reason we recommend to upgrade SMA first for environments that have SMA:ESA running.
