10.5 CUCM Upgrade

Hi ,

Currently running through the 10.5 CUCM upgrade process and wanted to share and also ask opinion.

I have setup our Pub in the Lab  , 8.6.2SU2

Added the threekey cop file.

Ran the 10.5.1SU1a upgrade file.(No PCD)

Updated the vm to correct OS,hardware etc and also nic driver.

Everything seemed fine , so I switched versions and waited for the 10.5 to boot.

after quite a while of waiting I still couldn't access the web page.On further investigation I noticed the Tomcat service was stuck starting.

Restarted it , nothing. Rebooted entire vm and left it over the weekend booting up.Still stuck

I'm abit stuck now , anyone seen this? also I have read the release notes and the 2014 cisco live notes and seem to have found some contradicting info.

What is the order of switching versions after you have done the pub and need to start on the subs.Do you switchversion as soon as you have done the pub or do you wait until you have upgraded all the subs, tftps and then switch?

Switch version should be initiated after all the servers in the cluster have got the upgrade file installed on them, with version 10.5 in the inactive partition. Start with the switch version on the Pub. Once the Pub is up and running , you can then do the switch version on the subscribers.

However, the Tomcat not starting issue should not be related to the switch version order. Did you take a backup of the newly upgraded 10.5 and then edit its hardware settings followed by a restore?

Hi Manish , thanks for the reply

So I switched back to 8.6.2SU2 and then re ran the Upgrade.Switched back to 10.5 and waited. It took about 30 mins but eventually everything came up.Rebooted again to check , and it came up much quicker so that seems to be the way it is.

"Did you take a backup of the newly upgraded 10.5 and then edit its hardware settings followed by a restore?"

Glad you bought this up as I understand that the reason behind this is to align the partitions.I checked my 8.6.2 before istarted the upgraded, using the TAC approved method which said they were aligned

After the upgrade 10.5 reported the partitions aligned. The OVA readme talks about changing the OS NIC etc , which I did .Are there other reasons why I would now need to do a back and restore ? if my partitions are aligned?

If the partitions are aligned then no need to do a fresh install and restore, it was just a query.

Thought I would add some info for people.

I fixed the issue with Tomact not starting and or taking along time to boot up.You must deactivate the Extension Mobility Service before.Once I did that work fine and booted up a lot quicker.

Also in reference to the order of switching .If you are performing a refresh upgrade

Upgrade pub - switch pub -Upgrade Subs switch subs.

For L2 upgrade

Upgrade pub - upgrade subs - switch pub - switch subs

hope this helps
