Hi,
I have been given on of these older phones. I have successfully loaded the SIP firmware. It is picking up its SEP<MAC ADD>.cnf.xml file. Some questions
Can I use this as a standalone, i.e. without the need to fetch the config from the TFTP server each boot.
How can I use this with residential sip providers (I have several accounts and successful configured spa508Gs to use the various providers.
Not all of the options can be set manually on the phone even when entering **# and the password in the .cnf.xml file. Is there a way to enable all the settings so I can program it via the phone.
Do I need to run FreePBX or astrix to make this work as a phone?
Thanks

AFAIK you must buy "3PCC" part number cisco phones for this scenarios you said..
e.g check 7821-3PCC or 8841-3PCC
many options of "K9" part number cisco phone must be configured on CUCM or CUBE, and it's not very flexible on scenarios you said..

The CP-79XX can be "converted" to integrate with 3rd party call controllers like Asterisk or 3CX -- I speak the truth because I have a handful of 7945/7965 and 9951/9971 connected to Asterisk at home.
To get the phone to work, the following are required:
1. Known working SEPmacaddress.cnf.xml;
2. Dial plan (Google it -- There are plenty of examples.)
3. SIP firmware file(s) for the phone;
4. TFTP server; and
5. DHCP Option 150.
To get the phone to go through the internet, disable NAT and disable ALG.
Good luck.

Thanks, but the question was can it operate standalone, as say a SPA501G can? I would prefer not to have to run Asterisk.

Sure. The 7962G is a phone. The SPA501G is a phone. But the SPA501G is connected to a voice service provider, with a high probability, running Asterisk in the background. Asterisk can either be at home or at the voice service provider. It does not make any difference.
The 7962G can be configured to talk to a local Asterisk server or at the voice service provider level.
