A basic question about sip

I have been seeing "uri dialing" about SIP. My understanding is that SIP phone can use the email format username@domain.com to call the other party. My question is: when a user call a phone number, say 1234 from a sip phone, does it also use uri dialing format behind the scene, or only when enter username@domain.com when dialing?

Yes it will, but the URI will be like 1234@domain.com. Of course, a gateway can convert that into an E.164 if it needs to though.
