C881-V-K9 UC License - Required or not?

Hi,

I'm trying to purchase a C881-V-K9. I want to run CME on it. It supposedly supports up to 5 IP phones. When ordering this router, under CME-SRST LIcense, I can select FL-CME or FL-SRST. Both are $0.00.

However, there's also an IOS Technology Package License - SL-8XX-UC-K9 available for it (Unified Communication Paper PAK for Cisco 881 and 887) for $350 (list price). If I purchase the router without this "IOS Technology Package License" paper PAK, will I be able to use CME on it or is this PAK required to get a license to activate the CME features?

I can't find this information anywhere. Obviously, I don't want to pay $350 for the "paper PAK" if it's not required. I'm going to use this in my house, so no profit will be made off this router.

So, the document linked above pretty much spells it out. I still have a qustion, does this apply to C881-V-K9?

Hi Sirozha,

I was going through the datasheet of Cisco 880 series routers  which says that 881V model supports voice gateway inbuilt  functionality .To support CME/SRST further,the same router can be upgraded. This means we need to buy licenses which could be Paper licenses.

Please cross-check with Cisco as well.

I work for a large Cisco partner (probably the largest in the US), and I've asked my Cisco licensing specialist about this. It appears you have to get the  SL-8XX-UC-K9 license to activate the UC license that provides CME/SRST functionality just like the link above says. The C881-V-K9 uses a universal IOS image, so the UC feature is locked in it until it's unlocked by this license. So, the "paper" PAK will probably need to be used to obtain a license file from Cisco (www.cisco.com/go/license) and then upload it into the 881-V router.

I'm also looking at the C892F-CUBE-K9 router. Cisco Feature Navigator mentions that it supports CME. I can't find any information on this router anywhere on the web. I wonder if this router really supports CME and how many phones can be used concurrently with this router.

Replying to my own question:

I have purchased an 881-v router. The SL license for the UC technology package (of which CME-SRST is part) is a paper PAK enclosed in an unsealed envelope. It is a piece of paper that Cisco charges $350 list price for. The UC technology package on the 881-v platform is part of Advanced IP Services and is not enforceable in this platform. I did not have to generate a license with the paper PAK. In fact, the paper PAK has no number on it that could be used to generate a license. The CME-SRST feature works out of the box as long as Advanced IP Services IOS image is running on the router.

Also, the 881-v has a PVDM2-16, but it could not be used for hardware media resources (transcoding or conferencing). This DSP can only be used for voice termination of onboard FXO port, FXS ports, and BRI ports.
