Is there a way to prepend a letter or text to an inbound caller id name

On the IOS gateway side there's no facility to do this. The only translations / adjustments available are for the number only, not the name.

so what can be done with the line, I would like to append a number that shows what gateway the inbound call is coming from.

If all you want to do is prepend a number, create a translation pattern that the gateway can call. If the significant digits inbound is four for example, make the translation pattern XXXX. Then for the Calling Search Space, put in a CSS that can call the extensions. For the calling party transform mask, put in 1XXXXXXXXXX which is 1 and the ten digit caller-id. This should prepend the 1 to the caller ID. Do that for gateway one. For gateway two, prepend a 2 and so forth. Make sure that gateway one can only call the translation pattern of XXXX that will translate the caller-id to 1XXXXXXXXXX and make sure that gateway 2 can only call the translation pattern that will transform the caller ID to 2XXXXXXXXXX.

Great idea, but what happens when the caller-id is not present (comes across as unknown).

You can still use translation pattern for non existing Caller ID and change it something else.
