Cisco 8831 known issues

here are some known issues surrounding the 8831 Conference phone model...

issue:  Phone boots to a Cisco splash screen then to Revo labs then back to a lit or dark Cisco splash screen again and does nothing else.  If you check your UC system the phone is registered and you can even call that phone and hear it ring, but because the keypad is un-responsive you can't answer the call or do anything else.  a Factory reset did not work.  We had over 60+ phones come from the manufacture with so-called bad keypads.  changed the keypads to a working one and the main speaker works fine, but use the bad keypad on a different main speaker and you get the same issue on a good known working speaker.  from our testing it was found that phones recently manufactured seemed to exhibit this behavior while older phones did not.

resolution:  upgrade the firmware.  The firmware we were using was shipped with sip8831.9-3-3-5.  The fix is actually in the interim software sip8831.9-3-3-TO-10-3-1-v2 which is the sw you need to be on prior to going to sip8831.10-3-1SR1-1-NA

    • interesting note from Cisco;  If you do a factory reset on a 8831 that is running a newer firmware say sip8831.10-x or higher, you will need to load/specify the interim sw sip8831.9-3-3-TO-10-3-1-v2 again prior to going to sip8831.10-x

issue:  8831 has a display with scrolling bar that seems to paint the screen after boot up, you can see the Cisco splash screen behind it, but it does nothing else, just stays there.  The keypad mute and speaker button flashes either together or back and forth.

resolution:  on the keypad hold both the mute and speaker button together until the unit resets.  also make sure you have the interim software specified on the phone as well prior to starting this process.

issue:  8831 reboots or resets every couple minutes.  The 8831 will registered and functions normally.  This was seen on our network with some phones recently deployed and/or have been deployed 8831's.

resolution:  issue the Factory Reset procedure/sequence on this device.

issue:  how to factory reset a 8831 device (Manually or via Apps menu)

resolution:

    1. Press and hold mute button on main speaker until button turns red then release.
    2. press and hold again for 3 more times (press for 2sec and release for 1sec)
    3. on the last time hold the button down until the unit turns off or powers off.
    4. Or you can access the Apps menu and do a “Reset All”. I found that the manual way seems to work better.
