Hi,
I am upgrading my CUBE (300 sessions) in active/standby mode (not box-to-box redundancy) to 4331 series routers with IOS 17.2.1r. For the session license, do I need to purchase 300 sessions for each CUBE (total 600) or I need to purchase only 300 session licenses in total?
This question arises from the below update in the CUBE configuration guide regarding IOS XE 17.2.1r release that license is counted dynamically.
Hence I assume, at one point of time, only one CUBE will be consuming the licenses from CSSM.
Feature NameReleasesFeature Information
Cisco UBE Smart license usage based on dynamic call counting | Cisco IOS XE Amsterdam 17.2.1r | Cisco UBE Smart Licensing is enhanced to request licenses periodically based on dynamic counting of licenses consumed during that period. |
Thanks and regards,

you need to use smart license, so there is no license installed on the device. all your license will in your smart account. and you add these devices as instances.
as per the document it says
Smart licenses are consumed only for active calls (In-Leg and Out-Leg) involving SIP Trunk. so with 300 standard license you should be able to cover your requirement( if using box-to-box you need to use enhanced).
I would recommend to open a case with partner support or reach out to local Cisco SE.
