Hello,
I have a customer that lost connectivity to their corp directory recently and gets a message "host not found" when trying to access the corp directory from their phones. Most of the phones are 7940/60 and 7941/61. Directories URL under Enterprise parameters are specified by IP address so it should not be a DNS issue. The Corp directory is also accessible through the ccmuser page. My first thought was that there is a network connectivity problem but I'm assured by the customer that the phone traffic does not pass through any firewalls or ACLs when accessing the Pub.
I found a Cisco doc that says to remove the secure directories URL under enterprise parameters to correct the problem on 7941/61 phones. I've done this but the phones still get a "host not found" error message. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix or what I might be missing?
Thanks,
Glenn

Hi Glen
If the directory is showing up as configured correctly on the handset (the most common occurence of this is that it is missing for whatever reason), then I would do the following:
1. Go into the phone settings, and make a note of the directories URL. Then try to browse to the URL from a PC. The directory is an XML page, so can be displayed from pretty much any browser (e.g. IE).
2. If it displays ok from a PC, then I would run Wireshark on a PC behind the phone, with the phone configured on CUCM to mirror its switch port into the PC port. Trace what happens when you press the directories button on the phone to see if anything is making it out of the phone or not. This normally helps you get to the bottom of what is (or isn't) going on.
If (1) doesn't work, then it suggests that Tomcat has probably got a problem, and it would be worth restarting it. Are anyother web based services (e.g. Extension Mobility) working ok?
Hope this helps.

Barry,
Thanks for the reply. I'm a little confused with how the directories actually work now with CUCM 7 and 8 with the Corporate directory being a phone service. Do the phones actuall even use the Directories URL from Enterprise parameters when there is an Enterprise subscription to the corporate directory listed as an app?
Also, in CUCM 8, there is a section under enterprise paramenters that I don't recal seeing before called "secure Phone URL Parameters" What devices use the secure URLs vs. the non-secure URLs?
Thanks,
Glenn

Hi Glenn
I *think* the the phone service is there to allow you to assign the corp directory to a line button on the phone as a short cut, or to add it to the services menu. I've done something similar in the past for the Personal Address Book.
I'm 99.9% certain that the directories URL is still used when you press the directories button on the phone. Not sure about the secure URL stuff - I would imagine that would be for if you wanted to use HTTPS to retrieve the directory rather than the default HTTP. In my experience of CUCM, if everything is working ok initially, you can pretty much guarantee that you will break it by enabling HTTPS.
I haven't got a version 8.x system I can get onto to check right now, but I will when I get second. If the directory URL is still listed under Exterprise Parameters then you can be pretty certain this is what the phones will use when you hit the button. If you have CIPCrunning it would be pretty easy to check if you had Wireshark on the same PC.

Hi Glenn,
under Enterprise Parameter -> Phone URL Parameter is there something in the field "IP Phone Proxy Address"?
If yes, delete the entry then the service should work.
Kind Regards,
Sven
