Data network for VoIP traffic

Hi,

Currently work on multiple LANs designed for data. 6509 cores linked together using L2 POs. All HSRP/ OSPF Adj are via these links.

Ive recenly read ideally VoIP needs L3 connectivity between cores, and distribution layer. L3 dist is a non starter but would it be better design to add L3 Port channels also between cores? If i didnt, what negative problems could occur?

Many thanks

S

L2 or L3 is fine, L3 eliminates convergence with STP hence the recommendation.

HTH,

Chris

Thanks Chris, thats good to know. I asked the same on the Learning network and was advised L3 from the Distribution

L3 is prefered, L2 is fine.

HTH, please mark the question as answered unless you have further questions.

Thanks Chris, final question. Im hoping to use class c vlans for voip. Would having the vlan scattered around the lan cause problems?

We are deploying 48 port POE around campus and configuring ports based on how many address are free in that subnet, then rolling onto the next subnet if full.
Thanks

S
