I was under the impression that directory queries on a CM network were LDAP based, but someone I know is insisting that the directory is downloaded as an XML file. LDAP or XML?

I know that everything we see at ip phone screen is an xml page. So; i think the directory is downloaded as an xml file. For example; the default URL for directory service is http://192.168.0.251/CCMCIPP/xmldirectory.asp

LDAP is used to connect to the Directory server for queries. This info is right and it runs between CallManager and LDAP Server (AD or Localhost when using DC Directory).
When a Phone requests for Info, it sends an HTTP request to CM which inturn queries the Directory using LDAP. Once CM gets the info from Directory it sends the result to the Phones in an XML format as phones cannot display anything which is not in XML format
