Eth0 failed on Publisher - How to Configure Eth1

Hey all,

Wondering if someone can assist.

The Ethernet0 port on my Cisco MCS 7835H has failed.  I have tried numerous things to get it back but looks like a hardware fault.

What I would like to know is how I can configure Ethernet1?

When i try to "set network eth1" it is not a valid option.

Eth 1 has not previously been configured so not sure if it needs mounted etc.

All work needs to be done via the Linux CLI.  have looked on Cisco and cannot find any help at all.

Thanks in Advance.

Eth1 is supposed to be a backup, which is what the failover enables, in case one NIC goes down the other will take over but both should not be active at the same time so it may be to prevent trying to have both enabled at the same time which could cause problems.  It's documented that eth1 isn't configurable here (meaning it takes the settings of eth0 and applies them): http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/cucos/7_1_2/cucos/iptpch4.html#wp1042800.

You'll want to "set network failover" which creates a bond and since eth0 is down eth1 will take over.

Joemar2,

I saw the fail over option but wasn't sure and Cisco has no configuration guides on Linux at all which is pretty poor!

So if i set the failover on Eth1 it should take the place of Eth0 as it is down.  I will try that tomrrow when I am back in the office.

Can you tell me why I cannot simply configure Eth1 and why its not an option like Eth 0?

Thanks

Joemar2,

Awesome - I will give that a go tomorrow.

Thanks for your help!
