7940 data sheet:
7942:
7940s are very old and were the 1st gen 79XX phones, 7942 are 3rd generation and support lots more features since they have lots more memory, all of the features should be listed on the data sheet.
The easy way to tell the difference is the screen resolution and the line buttons which are illuminated on 7942.
