Router sizing for Voice Site

Joshua Engels

Hey guys,

I have remote MPLS Site in Atlanta that I would like to extend my Baton Rouge CUCM enviornment to.  At this site I will have 13 Cisco 8945 phones.  Two of these users will be part of the UCCX team in Baton Rouge but will be physcially located in Atlanta.  I am trying to determine whether I should upgrade one of my spare 2811's or purchase a new 2911.  Here is what I am hoping someone can give me a safe opinion on.

I am looking to upgrade the Flash from 64MB to 256MB so I can run the latest IOS.  I am already licensed with Advanced IP Services on this router.  Do I need a different IOS or will this suffice?

Also, How much DRAM should I have for a site like this?  Is 256MB enough?

I plan to purchase an SRST license as well.

I am hoping this will cut cost as we bought the 2811 years ago with voice in mind.

Thanks for any insight.

Josh,

2811 with adequate RAM and flash to support the IOS version you want will suffice. Advanced IP services latest IOS require 512 Mb of RAM and 128 Mb ot Flash, though you may want to get bigger flash to host CME files and other IOS versions.

Josh,

Actually, the main hiccup here is that you are planning to use the Cisco 8945 phones. According to the link below, this requires SRST 9.0 or later (if using SIP) and version 8.8 or later if using SCCP.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cusrst/admin/sccp_sip_srst/configuration/guide/srst_roadmap.html

The IOS versions needed to get the proper SRST feature set don't include support for the 2811. Sorry to say. You can poke around the feature navigator here and determine what will fit that model.

If you are not willing to budge on the phone set model then I believe you will need to look at get a new ISR for the site.

Hey guys,

I received this email from my Cisco Rep last year when we ran into the 8945/2811 issue.  Check out the link in regards to compatability and let me know what you think.

Kevin,

Good news.  Yes sir, they are now supported and the compatibility matrix is updated.
