I am not sure what system do you want to use but generally speaking the building blocks are:

1. Call Control Agent (e.g. Cisco CUCM, Cisco CME, Asterisk, etc)

2. PoE switch

3. Voice Gateway (to connect to PSTN using PRI or FXO which are the most common. also it acts as gateway to the phones)

4. DHCP server

These are the main building blocks for basic phone system and you can add on top this as you go. Also, you need to get the licenses as needed.

hi,

cucm is unified call manager? and cme is call manager express? I can use either one?

Yes you can use either one.

CUCM is an application which can be installed on ESXi which would need some server hardwared.

CUCME is a feature/service on Cisco Router.

Thanks

Thanks again,

we have a HPE dl20 running widows server will it work on vm for it, or do we need another server cucm?

Check the CPU Compatibility in below guide

http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/UC_Virtualization_Supported_Hardware#Processor

CPU Table 1 - Allowed Specs-based CPUs

I fear it is not supported as per below link the CPU Is Intel® Xeon® E3   which is not listed in Allowed CPU Table for CPU.

Please take time to rate and mark correct answer as applicable.

Thanks

hi,

will it work if its not supported?

It might work but there might be some unexpected behaviors.

Thanks

Please rate :)

hi,

what unexpected bevahiours ? otherwise what isr?

See On third Party Servers Cisco Support will be limited. As it is not fully tested by Cisco.

You can read more about Cisco support policy here.

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/voice-unified-communications/unified-communications-system/115955-uc-specs-tshoot-00.html

Specs-based 3rd-party server hardware meeting the requirements athttp://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/UC_Virtualization_Supported_Hardware is “allowed” by Cisco, but Cisco does not perform any testing or validation on the 3rd-party hardware.

No prediction or assurance of UC app VM performance is made when installed on 3rd-party Specs-based hardware. Only guidance is provided, and ownership of assuring that the pre-sales hardware design provides the performance required by UC apps shifts from Cisco to the customer. Otherwise, if all rules at http://www.cisco.com/go/uc-virtualized are followed, Cisco TAC will assist with troubleshooting to rule out application issues as the root cause. Customer owns driving resolution of non-Cisco hardware/software issues, or non-Cisco hardware/software root causes of application issues (including customer-provided VMware software as described in Support Clarifications for Virtualization Software later in this document). Customer might need to engage 3rd-party vendors to investigate the non-Cisco components.

Also, keep in mind the points listed below in Key Support Considerations When Deploying on Specs-based Hardware. These points help clarify what Cisco TAC may require to provide effective support and how far TAC will take a problem.

So if an Intel CPU is not listed in the CPU Table 1 (refer below link) it is unsupported by Cisco TAC.

We cannot guarantee if CUCM will work as expected or will there be any anomalies.

http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/UC_Virtualization_Supported_Hardware#CPU.C2.A0Table_1_-_Allowed_Specs-based_CPUs

The following CPUs are NOT supported for UC:

  • Intel CPUs that are IN one of the supported architectures/families, but do NOT meet minimum physical core speeds, are not supported for UC.
  • Unlisted Intel CPU architectures/families (such as Intel Xeon 6500, E5-16xx, Core-i7, etc.) are NOT supported for UC. An Intel CPU architecture is not supported for UC unless listed in CPU Table 1.
  • Other CPU vendors such as AMD are not supported for UC.

Cisco TAC is not obligated to troubleshoot UC app issues when deployed on unsupported hardware

So for production environment i would recommend to go with supported hardware so that we can get TAC support for issues.

Thanks

You said you have Windows Server running on HP Server.

Please also review Co-residency policy of Cisco which describes, which other VM can share the hardware with UC Applications.

See "Special Rules for non-UC and 3rd-party Co-residency" in guide

http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Unified_Communications_Virtualization_Sizing_Guidelines#Application_Co-residency_Support_Policy

ok,

    which isr router is supported?

ISR 2900 series, ISR 3900 series, ISR4k. They support CME along with CME-SRST and UCk9 licenses. In case you are looking for voicemail, you will need SRE module.

thanks,

          I have solved this issue

Thanks,

for your I think we will return phone and get an phone that works without replacing our data center cisco need to change their advertsing as its borders on fraud
