Hi
Is it possible to connect a cisco gateway to the PSTN using a E1/T1 interface and connect to the callmanager using SIP
All I can see config for is H.323 and MGCP

Ian,
Sure you can have a dial-peer voice voip with seesion protocol sipv2 pointing to the CUCM server.
On the CUCM side you would create a SIP Trunk pointing to the GW IP Address.

I don't have a side by side comparison for SIP vs MGCP, but from my personal experience I would stick to MGCP.
SIP has pitfalls with MTP in some scenarios, unless there's a company policy favoring SIP over other protocols MGCP works quite well.
