Understanding CUCM Licensing

Hello Experts,

As you can see, we have many unassigned devices on our CUCM licensing page. The question is if we associate those devices with users, will we save on license usage?

Number of created users in CUCM : 7 117

Number of created devices in CUCM:  7 907

We are receving the following warning message.

Smart Software Licensing: The system is operating with an insufficient number of licenses. Configure additional licenses in Smart Software Manager within 88 days to avoid losing the ability to provision users and devices.

The link I sent contains comprehensive information on various licensing scenarios. You may need to review the material multiple times to fully understand how it applies to your specific deployment.

For instance, you have 3,120 Cisco Unified Client Services Framework SIP devices configured. If the Jabber client owners also have a desk phone, meaning each user has two devices, they will only consume one Enhanced License per user if both devices are assigned. However, if the Cisco Unified Client Services Framework SIP devices are not assigned to a user, each device consumes one Enhanced License on its own.

Additionally, it might be beneficial to clean up unused or unregistered devices. Starting from CUCM 12+, you can sort the Devices -> Phone page by 'Last Registered' or 'Last Active'. Implementing a policy to remove devices that haven't been registered or active within the last 90 to 120 days could help manage licenses more effectively.

Hello @mightyking ,

It really depends on what type of devices are unassigned and how many of each license type you have in your Smart Account. The following link shows a breakdown of device type, with and without a user assigned, and the type of license that is consumed in both instances.

Feature Configuration Guide for Cisco Unified Communications Manager, Release 12.5(1)SU1

I am not sure which version you are running but the license types should be similar for 12, 14, and 15.

He Robert,

This is what we have in our CUCM environement. Do you think associating the end users with phones would help us to save in licensing?
